Patchwork is a creative and resourceful craft that transforms fabric scraps into something new. Mirabel will guide you through composing and hand-sewing a small patchwork piece. Choose to make a coaster, pot holder, or needle case - or begin a larger piece to finish at home. Learning to improvise with scraps of any size or shape is a freeing way to make use of material that might otherwise go to waste. Mirabel will introduce you to colour selection and teach you the simple yet versatile running stitch used to piece your work together.

You’ll leave with a beautifully handmade item and the skills to continue exploring patchwork at home.

Mirabel Oliver

A longtime lover of many craft practices, Mirabel is a textile artist who studied sculpture at the University of Canterbury. In 2025 she held an exhibition in which her traditional needlework pieces plied together the daily threads of art and life. Mirabel loves the domesticity of working with wool and fabric, seeing their inherent resourcefulness and beauty as an important feature of family life. In 2026, she will be teaching drop-spindle spinning, hand darning, felt-bowl making, patchwork, and her new swiss darning workshop, as well as hosting our mending club.
