Wednesday 12 May, 7-9pm, Exploring sensory processing in relation to wellbeing (Inner resourcefulness programme)

This class with Julie Frew  is held at our Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.

This workshop is part of our Inner Resourcefulness programme, which is about using our inner resources, and developing our ability to access from within what we need for lives we value.

In this interactive seminar we will explore the sensory systems as they unfold throughout human development. This will include those we ordinarily know, as well as some senses that are not commonly considered in mainstream teaching/learning environments. We’ll look into sensory profiles – these are our ways of taking in, organising and responding to sensations from inside our body and from the world around us – and ways we try to maintain our state of harmony within ourselves.

How we process sensory information is connected to how we develop, experience emotions, and learn. Both our physical and relational surroundings can impact on our responses and how ‘well-matched’ these are to the situation. With a strong focus on te taiao, being in nature and nature-based resources, we will consider creative and day-to-day ways to enrich, nourish, calm and support our overall wellbeing.

About your tutor

Julie Frew is a registered occupational therapist, bringing 14+ years of experience alongside children and their families, supporting their sense of self, and their meaningful relationships with others and the world around them. She has completed post-graduate study in using sensory processing principles with diverse populations and additional training(s) in the use of psycho-sensory intervention, attachment and trauma-informed care. Julie draws heavily on the restorative power of music and a deep connection to the natural world in her work.

In occupational therapy we see 'doing', 'being', 'becoming' and 'belonging' as central to human health and wellbeing; integrating our body, feeling and thinking life, having agency, and developing in the context of relationships. Julie's holistic work has a sound underpinning in neuroscience, drawing heavily on the Neurosequential model (Perry, 2013), and linking this with the day to day activity that people find meaning in. Julie practises her sensory processing and trauma-informed work within a Neurodiversity paradigm.

Bookings are essential, non-refundable and non-transferable. We do, however, understand that things come up and try and accommodate people to the best of our ability. This can include moving people to another class or a refund - but please be aware that this is reliant on us filling the original spot.

This is because all of our pricing, and our efforts to keep costs as low as possible while still paying the tutors a fee commensurate with their experience and allowing them to cover the costs of living, is based on running these classes with a certain number of participants

Management of COVID-19 risk:

Participants who are unwell, or who are required to self-isolate, must not attend the workshop. Refunds will be given if participants need to miss the workshop in order to manage the risk of COVID-19, however we need to be advised of this as soon as possible, so that we can fill the space. Refunds will not be given if participants arrive to the workshop unwell on the day.
