This class is held at our Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.
Vaccination requirement: Anyone 12 and over attending our workshops at any level of the traffic light system must be fully vaccinated. Please bring proof of vaccination (My Vaccine Pass), to show at the start of your workshop. More details about how we are creating a safe space for you in our workshops that are held within an open public setting can be found HERE.
This Craft Opportunities workshop has been made free/low cost only for Community Service and SuperGold "Combo" Card holders by the support of funding from Creative New Zealand. You will be asked to show your card at the start of the workshop, so please ensure you bring it with you. Regular SuperGold Cards are not accepted, it must be a "Combo" card with CSC number on the back. Any costs charged for these programmes are only for materials. Cash donations on the day will be very welcome but are not expected.
There are very limited places in these workshops, so please only book if you are sure you can make it on the day.
Learn to weave a tray with a mix of willow and tī kōuka on a prepared frame and some straight sticks. You will learn a simple weaving technique which is used for frame style baskets.
Please wear comfortable practical clothing. If you have access to freshly fallen tī kōuka leaves it would be appreciated if you could bring a bundle which has been soaking in water for a couple of days. If you have secateurs, please also bring these along.
If you have any other long, thin, flexible vines from your garden that you would like to experiment with, such as ivy, blackberry etc, please also bring these along. These should be fresh or soaked at least overnight.
We make use of tī kōuka/cabbage tree leaves in this workshop as these are such an abundant and multi-purpose material that we can find all around us.
Tangata whenua have been weaving with tī kōuka for hundreds of years here in Aotearoa. If you are interested learning traditional Māori weaving techniques, we can recommend contacting the wonderful team at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa who teach these locally. We also recommend the amazing mahi and workshops of the Kahu Collective.

Minimum numbers are required for this class to run.
About your tutor
Diana learnt tī kōuka string and basket making from Juliet Arnott in 2016 and joined Rekindle as a tutor in 2019. In this time Diana has explored this materials use in a myriad of ways. Having studied fashion design and worked in clothing repairs and alterations Diana has always enjoyed creative design and problem solving. Her desire to tread lightly on this earth and conserve its resources has found a natural fit with this locally abundant and durable material. She has also worked with willow and is eager to deepen her weaving knowledge experience.
Management of COVID-19 risk:
As we wish to operate as safely as possible, and protect the health of our communities, Rekindle will be running vaccinate mandated workshops from the implementation of the traffic light system, at all levels of the traffic light system.
This means that from Covid-19 traffic light system confirmation, anyone 12 and over attending a workshop at Rekindle must be fully vaccinated.
Mask-wearing is also a requirement at Orange & Red, and strongly encouraged at Green. Please visit our COVID policy page for more details.
Participants who are unwell, or who are required to self-isolate, must not attend the workshop. Refunds will be given if participants need to miss the workshop in order to manage the risk of COVID-19, however we need to be advised of this as soon as possible, so that we can fill the space.
Refunds will not be given if participants arrive to the workshop unwell on the day, and they will be asked to leave. Refunds will not be given to unvaccinated persons arriving at the workshop on the day, and they will be asked to leave
We are grateful for the support of CNZ, which has allowed us to run these free and low-cost classes.
