This class is held at our Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.
In this workshop Diana Duncan teaches participants to weave a rectangular basket from locally sourced tī kōuka, suitable for storing seed packs, pegs, cutlery, bottles and so on.
We will be weaving around a mold to create a basket that measures approximately 27cm L x 8.5cm H x 13cm W.
This technique is an extension of our round basket and can be replicated with other fibres and around other forms to create baskets of almost any size.
For best results participants will be asked to leave their baskets on the mold at the Arts Centre workshop to dry for at least two days.
If you have access to fallen tī kōuka / cabbage tree leaves please soak them in water for at least 24-48 hours and bring them along on the day.
There are 8 spaces available.
Minimum numbers are required for the class to run.
About your tutor
Diana learnt tī kōuka string and basket making from Juliet Arnott in 2016 and joined Rekindle as a tutor in 2019. In this time Diana has explored this materials use in a myriad of ways. Having studied fashion design and worked in clothing repairs and alterations Diana has always enjoyed creative design and problem solving. Her desire to tread lightly on this earth and conserve its resources has found a natural fit with this locally abundant and durable material. She has also worked with willow and is eager to deepen her weaving knowledge experience.
Bookings are essential, non-refundable and non-transferable. We do, however, understand that things come up and try to accommodate people to the best of our ability. This can include moving people to another class or a refund - but please be aware that this is reliant on us filling the original spot. This will incur an admin fee of $5.
This is because all of our pricing, and our efforts to keep costs as low as possible while still paying the tutors a fee commensurate with their experience and allowing them to cover the costs of living, is based on running these classes with a certain number of participants.
We are grateful to be able to offer this workshop in a partially subsidised manner because of support from Creative New Zealand, and from Te Matatiki Toi Ora the Arts Centre.
Management of COVID-19 risk:
Participants who are unwell, or who are required to self-isolate, must not attend the workshop. Refunds will be given if participants need to miss the workshop in order to manage the risk of COVID-19, however we need to be advised of this as soon as possible, so that we can fill the space. Refunds will not be given if participants arrive to the workshop unwell on the day.
