Come along and learn how to make a woven bag on a frame loom with Bella Roake in a class held at our Matatiki Toi Ora Arts Centre workshop, located upstairs in the former Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.
During this workshop with Bella Roake you’ll learn some basic techniques for frame loom weaving, along with some extra skills including setting up your own cardboard loom, plain weave, hemstitch, and plying & plating yarn. By the end of our time together, you’ll have some basic skills to keep weaving, and walk away with a small bag, perfect for carrying small objects like your phone and keys, ready for any adventure.
We’ll be working with locally sourced wool fibres. Feel free to bring your own button or toggle, and any chunky yarn you wish to use, otherwise all will be provided.
This craft entails a beautiful repetitive flow that has been around for thousands of years largely unchanged, so enjoy the time to slow down and work together.
Masks are required for this workshop.
Bella Roake first learnt to sew with her grandmother as a young child, her interest in arts and crafts were cultivated during her school years and then further developed when she did a Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Textiles at Massey University, where she discovered a love for fiber craft and natural dyes. She's since then learnt many more new skills, collaborating with like-minded people, and is now finding inspiration in teaching and sharing the knowledge.
