Weave a floor mat from Tī kōuka (cabbage tree) leaves
This class with Diana Duncan takes place in our workshop at the Arts Centre, which is located upstairs in the Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.
In this workshop participants will learn to weave tī kōuka (cabbage tree) leaves into a small floor mat measuring approximately 400 mm x 600 mm. For use as a door mat or anywhere in your home.
This technique has been developed with thanks to Creative New Zealand, Simone Bensdorp and the talented Ilke White (check her online workshops out!) and can be used to weave mats in a range of sizes.
We will be using large 12 mm size crochet hooks to help us weave the leaves together. You are welcome to bring your own crochet hook if you have a favourite one.
This workshop is quite physically demanding for the hands and arms and requires sustained concentration. We will take breaks and you are encouraged to bring a good lunch, drink bottle and snacks with you to keep your energy up.
It is helpful if you have worked with tī kōuka previously or have spent time on other large scale weaving projects.
If participants are able to, it would be much appreciated if they could bring some tī kōuka leaves which have been soaking in water for 3-4 days. If you are left handed or would prefer to use your own scissors then please bring these with you. Please wear comfortable work clothes and shoes.
There are 6 places available in this workshop. This class is suitable for adults.
Minimum numbers are required for the class to run.
Bookings are essential, non-refundable and non-transferable. We do, however, understand that things come up and try and accommodate people to the best of our ability. This can include moving people to another class or a refund - but please be aware that this is reliant on us filling the original spot.
This is because all of our pricing, and our efforts to keep costs as low as possible while still paying the tutors a fee commensurate with their experience and allowing them to cover the costs of living, is based on running these classes with a certain number of participants
We are grateful for the support of CNZ, which has allowed us to offer this class at a subsidised rate.
Management of COVID-19 risk:
Participants who are unwell, or who are required to self-isolate, must not attend the workshop. Refunds will be given if participants need to miss the workshop in order to manage the risk of COVID-19, however we need to be advised of this as soon as possible, so that we can fill the space. Refunds will not be given if participants arrive to the workshop unwell on the day.
