About this experience

Learn how to make blanks from a log for spoon-carving.

This workshop will teach keen spoon-carvers how to start from scratch - using a hatchet to do the splitting out and rough shaping of their spoons.

You'll learn how to use one of the most fun and versatile tools, as well as safe axe technique and how to set up and sharpen a hatchet for carving and shaping wood. You'll also make several spoon blanks for carving.

We provide all tools, but if you are interested in purchasing your own so that you can practice these skills at home - our tool buying advice is here for those interested and you can purchase tools from us online or from our workshop at The Arts Centre.

This class is held at the beautiful Brandenburg Coppice, a unique woodland on the Lincoln University campus, and is taught by Douglas Horrell of Cleft Craft.

Please note:

  • This class is weather dependent. We run this class on Sunday 1st October if it is rained out on the Saturday.

  • This workshop is only suited to those who can work safely without direct supervision with very sharp hand tools.

  • Minimum numbers are required for the class to run.
