Saturday 11 June, 10.30am-2.30pm, Spinning with a Drop Spindle

Come along and learn how to spin with a drop spindle with Annie Mackenzie in a class held at our Matatiki Toi Ora Arts Centre workshop, located upstairs in the former Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.

During this workshop with Annie Mackenzie and Mirabel Oliver you will learn an ancient craft that has been practised by people throughout the world for thousands of years, so that you are able to create a beautiful soft yarn to use in your knitting, crochet or weaving projects.

Here in Aotearoa we are privileged to have access to high quality fleece grown locally, right here on our doorstep, so let's use it! Wool is an abundant natural resource and has played a vital role in our fibre craft and textile production histories. In the class we will be using Polwarth from Starcrest Farm in Oxford, North Canterbury. You will have the opportunity to purchase a drop spindle ($15) to take home to continue your spinning journey.

Minimum numbers are required for this workshop to run.

Masks are required for this workshop.

Annie Mackenzie maintains an artistic practice as a weaver and spinner, with hand hewn frugalness part of the evolving equation. When she is not weaving at her loom, Annie can be found haunting wool sales and shearing sheds, tracing connections and gaining fleeces.
She has a bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Ilam School of Fine Arts, but learnt her craft through the New Zealand Woolcrafts Association of Weavers and Spinners Guilds. Through her practice she celebrates the beauty of wool from fleece to yarn to cloth. Thanks to funding from Creative New Zealand, Annie was a craftsperson in resident at Rekindle in 2021. She co-developed a drop spindle spinning workshop to be taught in 2022 alongside Mirabel Oliver.
