Monday 24 October, 12.30- 4.30pm, Ōtepoti Dunedin: Tī Kōuka Basket

Come along this Labour Weekend and learn how to weave a basket with Diana Duncan. This workshop is located at the O Block Hub, on the corner of ANZAC Ave and Minerva St in Ōtepoti Dunedin. More detailed information about location and parking will be provided prior to the workshop.

This course will give you a resourceful skill that you'll be able to use in so many ways for the rest of your life!  We will teach you how to weave a basket using the stake and strand technique, which originated in the UK/Europe.

We will be using tī kōuka/cabbage tree leaves in this workshop as these are such an abundant and multi-purpose material that we can find all around us. If you have access to fallen/brown tī kōuka leaves, please bring in as big a bundle as you can! Please soak them first in water overnight if possible, if not longer. Diana will share ideas and tips with you for other plant fibres you can use. You can use this method for basket-weaving with many different materials.

At this stage face masks are required for this workshop unless you have an exemption

Diana Duncan learnt tī kōuka string and basket making from Juliet Arnott in 2016 and joined Rekindle as a tutor in 2019. In this time Diana has explored this materials use in a myriad of ways. Having studied fashion design and worked in clothing repairs and alterations Diana has always enjoyed creative design and problem solving. Her desire to tread lightly on this earth and conserve its resources has found a natural fit with this locally abundant and durable material. She has also worked with willow and is eager to deepen her weaving knowledge experience.

Cancellations

We are reliant on full workshops to cover our considerable travel costs from Ōtautahi Christchurch. Therefore, bookings are strictly non-refundable unless we can be advised in enough time to be able to sell your ticket to someone else.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you think you may not make it so we can try to do this for you. You may also choose to transfer your booking to another name. If Rekindle needs to cancel the workshop for any reason, you will be fully refunded
