Come along and learn how to weave a putiputi (Lily Flower)with Mihi Adams in a workshop held at our Matatiki Toi Ora Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the former Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.
This workshop is free/low-cost for Community Service Card holders, though donations are appreciated. The standard workshop price of $35 applies for those without cards. Please select the appropriate option at the bottom of the page.
Learn how to hāpine (soften) harakeke for weaving, and the rhythm of the takitahi (over-under) pattern . with local kairaranga Mihi Adams. You'll also learn how to use a pasta machine to make harakeke ribbon. A wonderful beginner workshops for those that have never worked with harakeke before, leading on to kono or konae and eventually waikawa. Mihi will also share about the processes and tikanga that need to be observed when harvesting harakeke. This will be a relaxed workshop where you can work individually or with others.
There are very limited places in these workshops, so please only book if you are sure you can make it on the day. This is usually a 1 and a half hour workshop, but depending on the group it can sometimes take longer. Please make sure you have a spare hour afterwards for if you need to stay on to finish.
Masks are required for this workshop.
Mihi Adams (Ngāti Mahuika, Ngāti Hinemanu & Ngāti Kahu) has been weaving for over 15 years and runs her own raranga business, Flax Hut Creations. She studied at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and has been teaching raranga in a variety of settings since then. From weaving wahakura for Kāi Tahu babies to her previous role as kaitiaki Pā Harakeke at Manaaki Whenua, Mihi cherishes working with harakeke and has a deep appreciation and understanding of this natural material. She loves the increased wellbeing that come from weaving and wishes to share this calming, balancing craft that is traditional to Aotearoa with others.
