Wednesday 17 August, 9.30-13.30am , Craft Opportunities: Weave a konae whakawhiti

Come along and learn how to weave a konae whakawhiti with Mihi Adams in a workshop held at our Matatiki Toi Ora Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the former Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.

This workshop is free/low-cost for Community Service Card holders, though donations are appreciated. The standard workshop price of $60 applies for those without cards. Please select the appropriate option at the bottom of the page.

Learn how to weave a useful two-piece slide case for glasses, phone, notebook, even seed packets fit well into these. Bring along something to make it to fit. In this workshop you will be using Māori techniques and the natural material of harakeke with local kairaranga Mihi Adams. Mihi will also share about the processes and tikanga that need to be observed when harvesting harakeke. This will be a relaxed workshop where you can work individually or with others.

There are limited spaces for this workshop, so please only book if you are sure you can make it on the day. This is usually a 4 hour workshop, but depending on the group it can sometimes take longer. Please make sure you have a spare hour afterwards for if you need to stay on to finish.

Mihi Adams (Ngāti Mahuika, Ngāti Hinemanu & Ngāti Kahu) has been weaving for over 15 years and runs her own raranga business, Flax Hut Creations. She studied at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and has been teaching raranga in a variety of settings since then. From weaving wahakura for Kāi Tahu babies to her previous role as kaitiaki Pā Harakeke at Manaaki Whenua, Mihi cherishes working with harakeke and has a deep appreciation and understanding of this natural material. She loves the increased wellbeing that come from weaving and wishes to share this calming, balancing craft that is traditional to Aotearoa with others.
