Come along and learn how to weave a floor mat with Diana Duncan in a workshop held at our Matatiki Toi Ora Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the former Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.
In this workshop participants will learn to weave a small floor mat for use as a door mat or anywhere in your home. We will be using large 12 mm size crochet hooks to help us weave the leaves together. You are welcome to bring your own crochet hook if you have a favourite one.
We will be using tī kōuka/cabbage tree leaves in this workshop as these are such an abundant and multi-purpose material that we can find all around us. To learn more about tī kōuka and how we work with it, click HERE.
Tangata whenua have been weaving with tī kōuka for hundreds of years here in Aotearoa. If you are interested learning traditional Māori weaving techniques, we also offer Raranga workshops at Rekindle with Mihi Adams and Kahu Collective. We can also recommend contacting the team at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa who teach a full raranga programme as well as other Toi Māori.
Masks are required for this workshop.
Diana Duncan learnt tī kōuka string and basket making from Juliet Arnott in 2016 and joined Rekindle as a tutor in 2019. In this time Diana has explored this materials use in a myriad of ways. Having studied fashion design and worked in clothing repairs and alterations Diana has always enjoyed creative design and problem solving. Her desire to tread lightly on this earth and conserve its resources has found a natural fit with this locally abundant and durable material. She has also worked with willow and is eager to deepen her weaving knowledge experience
