About this experience

In this workshop you will learn to make a small notebook using recycled and repurposed materials, all bound beautifully together using the coptic stitch method. Coptic stitch is a beginner level bookbinding technique that uses only thread and allows the notebook to lay flat.

Meg will provide everything you need to complete your notebook, but please bring any additional materials you wish to incorporate into your notebook, such as:

  • Paper supermarket bags

  • Packaging or other cardboard to use for the cover and back

  • Any paper or interesting stationary you have sourced resourcefully (i.e. secondhand and not bought new).

Your Host

Meg Harte is an artist who brings her knowledge of environmental science to creative crafts for sustainability and wellbeing. Her work starts with the premise of recycled materials as a creative constraint. She combines zero waste with simple craft techniques to make unique handmade items including paper-making, bookbinding, fibre crafts and weaving.
Meg considers the foraging and use of recycled materials as a continuation of the tradition of foraging of natural materials. In todays world, there is artificial abundance in waste streams that, if tapped, provide almost endless resources for practical use and creative expression.
