Thursday 27 January, 10.30am-12pm, Craft Opportunities: String & rope-making with local plant fibres (Community Service Card holders)

This class is held in our workshop at the Art Centre, upstairs in the Boys High Building at 28 Worcester Blvd.

Vaccination requirement: Anyone 12 and over attending our workshops at any level of the traffic light system must be fully vaccinated. Please bring proof of vaccination (My Vaccine Pass), to show at the start of your workshop. More details about how we are creating a safe space for you in our workshops that are held within an open public setting can be found HERE.

This Craft Opportunities workshop has been made free/low cost only for Community Service and SuperGold "Combo" Card holders by the support of funding from Creative New Zealand. You will be asked to show your card at the start of the workshop, so please ensure you bring it with you. Regular SuperGold Cards are not accepted, it must be a "Combo" card with CSC number on the back. Any costs charged for these programmes are only for materials. Cash donations on the day will be very welcome but are not expected.

In Rekindle’s most popular workshop, learn how to use local plant materials to make a strong and beautiful twine. This technique for making string and rope, which originated in the UK/Europe, is simple and can be used with many different materials.

We will be teaching this technique using tī kōuka cabbage tree leaves, which are such an abundant and multi-purpose material that we can find all around us. If you have access to fallen/brown cabbage tree leaves, please feel free to bring a big bunch along with you, which have been soaked overnight or longer.
Tangata whenua have been weaving with tī kōuka for hundreds of years here in Aotearoa. If you are interested learning traditional Māori weaving techniques, we can recommend contacting the wonderful team at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa who teach these locally. We also recommend the amazing mahi and workshops of the Kahu Collective.

There are 12 places available in this workshop.

Bookings are essential. Please book one spot per person attending (including children).

Management of COVID-19 risk:

As we wish to operate as safely as possible, and protect the health of our communities, Rekindle will be running vaccinate mandated workshops from the implementation of the traffic light system, at all levels of the traffic light system.

This means that from Covid-19 traffic light system confirmation, anyone 12 and over attending a workshop at Rekindle must be fully vaccinated.

Mask-wearing is also a requirement at Orange & Red, and strongly encouraged at Green. Please visit our COVID policy page for more details.

Participants who are unwell, or who are required to self-isolate, must not attend the workshop. Refunds will be given if participants need to miss the workshop in order to manage the risk of COVID-19, however we need to be advised of this as soon as possible, so that we can fill the space.

Refunds will not be given if participants arrive to the workshop unwell on the day, and they will be asked to leave. Refunds will not be given to unvaccinated persons arriving at the workshop on the day, and they will be asked to leave

We are grateful to be able to offer this workshop in a subsidised manner because of support from Creative New Zealand.
