Sunday 27 February, 10.30am-2.30pm, Spinning with a drop spindle

This workshop is held at our Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.

Vaccination requirement: Anyone 12 and over attending our workshops at any level of the traffic light system must be fully vaccinated. Please bring proof of vaccination (My Vaccine Pass), to show at the start of your workshop. More details about how we are creating a safe space for you in our workshops that are held within an open public setting can be found HERE.

An ancient craft you can do anywhere, drop spindling truly is spinning on the hoof!

During this workshop with Annie Mackenzie or Mirabel Oliver you will learn the key skills to get spinning, including a plying technique, so that you are able to create a beautiful soft yarn to use in your knitting, crochet or weaving projects.

You will be provided with local sheep fleece and also have the opportunity to purchase a drop spindle ($15) to take home to continue your spinning journey.

Here in Aotearoa we are privileged to have access to high quality fleece grown locally, right here on our doorstep, so let's use it! Wool is an abundant natural resource and has played a vital role in our fibre craft and textile production histories. In the class we will be using Polwarth from Starcrest Farm in Oxford, North Canterbury.

The spinning technique you will learn is an ancient craft that has been practised by people throughout the world for thousands of years. Through learning this skill you will be able to connect yourself to this fascinating history and tradition.

Minimum numbers are required for this workshop to run.

Bookings are essential, non-refundable and non-transferable. We do, however, understand that things come up and try and accommodate people to the best of our ability. This can include moving people to another class or a refund - but please be aware that this is reliant on us filling the original spot. This will incur a $5 admin fee.

This is because all of our pricing, and our efforts to keep costs as low as possible while still paying the tutors a fee commensurate with their experience and allowing them to cover the costs of living, is based on running these classes with a certain number of participants.

Management of COVID-19 risk:

As we wish to operate as safely as possible, and protect the health of our communities, Rekindle will be running vaccinate mandated workshops from the implementation of the traffic light system, at all levels of the traffic light system.

This means that from Covid-19 traffic light system confirmation, anyone 12 and over attending a workshop at Rekindle must be fully vaccinated.

Mask-wearing is also a requirement at Orange & Red, and strongly encouraged at Green. Please visit our COVID policy page for more details.

Participants who are unwell, or who are required to self-isolate, must not attend the workshop. Refunds will be given if participants need to miss the workshop in order to manage the risk of COVID-19, however we need to be advised of this as soon as possible, so that we can fill the space.

Refunds will not be given if participants arrive to the workshop unwell on the day, and they will be asked to leave. Refunds will not be given to unvaccinated persons arriving at the workshop on the day, and they will be asked to leave

We are grateful to be able to offer this workshop in a subsidised manner because of support from Creative New Zealand
