Sunday 13 February, 10am to 2pm - Spoon-carving 1 (for beginners) at The Arts Centre

This class with Douglas Horrell is held at our Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.

Vaccination requirement: Anyone 12 and over attending our workshops at any level of the traffic light system must be fully vaccinated. Please bring proof of vaccination (My Vaccine Pass), to show at the start of your workshop. More details about how we are creating a safe space for you in our workshops that are held within an open public setting can be found HERE.

Come along and learn how to make a spoon! This class runs for four hours.

You will learn basic whittling techniques with straight & curved whittling knives, and learn all about the ancient traditions of greenwood-working.

We provide all tools, but if you are interested in purchasing your own so that you can practice these skills at home - our tool buying advice is here for those interested and you can purchase tools from us online or from our workshop at The Arts Centre

Please note: This workshop is only suited to adults and those who can work safely without direct supervision with very sharp hand tools. The image below shows the kinds of tools we’ll be using.

There are 8 places available in this workshop.

Minimum numbers are required for the class to run.

About your tutor

Douglas Horrell has been teaching with Rekindle since 2017 and specialises in hand-carved, functional items such as spoons and bowls, as well as having  an interest in chair-making and other greenwood traditions. He also has a growing interest in toolmaking - forging his own tools from high carbon steel. He hopes to offer locally-made carving tools to Rekindle students in the future. You can find him on Instagram and Facebook as @cleftcraft

Bookings are essential, non-refundable and non-transferable. We do, however, understand that things come up and try and accommodate people to the best of our ability. This can include moving people to another class or a refund - but please be aware that this is reliant on us filling the original spot. This will incur a $5 admin fee.

This is because all of our pricing, and our efforts to keep costs as low as possible while still paying the tutors a fee commensurate with their experience and allowing them to cover the costs of living, is based on running these classes with a certain number of participants.

We are grateful to be able to offer this workshop in a partially subsidised manner because of support from Creative New Zealand, and from Te Matatiki Toi Ora the Arts Centre.

Management of COVID-19 risk:

As we wish to operate as safely as possible, and protect the health of our communities, Rekindle will be running vaccinate mandated workshops from the implementation of the traffic light system, at all levels of the traffic light system.

This means that from Covid-19 traffic light system confirmation, anyone 12 and over attending a workshop at Rekindle must be fully vaccinated.

Mask-wearing is also a requirement at Orange & Red, and strongly encouraged at Green. Please visit our COVID policy page for more details.

Participants who are unwell, or who are required to self-isolate, must not attend the workshop. Refunds will be given if participants need to miss the workshop in order to manage the risk of COVID-19, however we need to be advised of this as soon as possible, so that we can fill the space.

Refunds will not be given if participants arrive to the workshop unwell on the day, and they will be asked to leave. Refunds will not be given to unvaccinated persons arriving at the workshop on the day, and they will be asked to leave

We are grateful to be able to offer this workshop in a partially subsidised manner because of support from Creative New Zealand.
