This workshop is held in our Arts Centre workshop, which is located upstairs in the Boys’ High building at 28 Worcester Boulevard.
This class cost includes $20 for materials.
Learn about dyes made from the natural resources around us, as well as their applications and recipes with Arina Senior, who has been creating natural dyes for decades.
Using brushes and quills, we will test natural dyes in a simple hand-made book bound with tī kōuka twine that we will make at the start of class.
We will dip-dye different types of sample fabrics to see how they absorb colour in different ways.
You will learn how to create these dyes at home to apply on wools, linen and cotton; to use for painting, crafting with kids, or creating a mood colour for event decor, like wedding bunting and more.
You will leave the workshop with this know-how, and a book of tested recipes and natural colour application techniques that you have created.
Participants must be aged 16 or over and under 18s must be accompanied by an appropriate, paying parent or guardian.
Minimum numbers are required for the class to run.
Bookings are essential, non-refundable and non-transferable. We do, however, understand that things come up and try and accommodate people to the best of our ability. This can include moving people to another class or a refund - but please be aware that this is reliant on us filling the original spot.
This is because all of our pricing, and our efforts to keep costs as low as possible while still paying the tutors a fee commensurate with their experience and allowing them to cover the costs of living, is based on running these classes with a certain number of participants
About Arina Senior
Arina’s work is strongly founded in concepts of recycling, conservation and sustainability. She only uses vegetation that has fallen to the ground and garden clippings for dyes. Building on traditional knowledge that she learned as a child from her grandmother in Siberia, she has spent years experimenting with local flora to create spectacular results. She will share these methods with you in detail, with tips and secrets honed over years of practice and research.
We are grateful for the support of CNZ, which has allowed us to offer this class at a subsidised rate.
