Learn how to weave a 2 cornered waikawa (large basket) using Māori techniques and the natural material of harakeke with local kairaranga Ngaio Cowell. Ngaio will also share about the processes and tikanga that need to be observed when harvesting harakeke. This will be a relaxed workshop where you can work individually or with others where you will leave with a two cornered Waikawa that is perfect to use tor harvesting.
Please note: There are very limited places in these workshops, so please only book if you are sure you can make it on the day. This is usually a 4 hour workshop, but depending on the group it can sometimes take longer. Please make sure you have a spare hour afterwards for if you need to stay on to finish.

Why?
Ngaio Cowell (Tainui; Ngaati Te Ata & Ngāti Porou) is a craftsperson who takes inspiration from nature. Ngaio is currently continuing to develop her raranga skills through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. She has learnt to weave with tī kōuka from Diana Duncan and continues to create artworks from foraged and native materials through business Tipu Toi. Ngaio is passionate about Kai sovereignty and will be teaching as part of our Resourceful Kai Programme.
