In this workshop with Gemma Stratton, you will learn how to make a hand brush using locally sourced resources: tī kōuka / cabbage tree leaves. The brush can be used for all sorts of jobs – from the workshop bench to the kitchen floor. Techniques and skills that will be covered during the course of the class include cord-making using our tī kōuka string-making technique, basic draw knife practice, hand-drilling and fibre preparation.
This workshop is running in conjunction with the Changing Threads Contemporary Textile Fibre Arts Awards 2023 in Whakatū Nelson, run by the Arts Council Nelson.
Please note; All materials and tools will be provided but please bring some leaves. If you have access to tī kōuka / cabbage tree leaves, do bring in as big a bundle as you can! Also bring an intention or job for your brush and if time allows we can work to tweak the brush for the specific job. This class is suitable for adults.
